The Consolation of Philosophy

The "consolation of philosophy" is exactly that it transcendently addresses the timeless questions of human nature. Roman philosopher Boethius, writing from prison while awaiting his execution, understood this well. Indeed, he discovered true freedom—for contemplation—while imprisoned, and he shares his revelation with the reader while reflecting on such perennials as the nature of the divine, man's place in an ordered universe, and free will.
