The events of 9/11 have served to focus Americans on the problem of national unity. As such, the laws, policies, ideas, and attitudes that prevent the assimilation of our nation's many different immigrant groups into American culture deserve a thorough re-evaluation. In The Unmaking of Americans: How Multiculturalism Has Undermined America's Assimilation Ethic, John J. Miller, a political reporter for National Review, shows how the increasing balkanization of American society has been the work of an entrenched and often anti-American liberal elite. Bilingual education, racial preferences, perverse welfare rules, and other liberal causes are tapped by Miller as preventing, and sometimes undoing, the making of Americans. Laying out a specific, plausible plan of action, Miller calls for the renewal of the patriotic social crusade that characterized the first part of the twentieth century, when immigrants were enabled and expected to become unapologetically American.
