Since not all staff members from each paper can attend the national editors
conference or a Start the Presses seminar, CN program officers visit
member publications for Campus Mentoring Sessions. During
these visits, a CN staff member answers questions about the publication
and provides advice about recruiting, layout, writing, and staff structure.
All CN program officers have extensive experience with alternative journalism
and will often act as 'troubleshooters' for the papers visited.
Additionally, on-campus site visits help our organization better tailor
effective programming for student publications and assess the political
and academic climate in the university.
Each academic year, CN program officers visit more than 50 campuses. Traversing the
country to offer hands-on assistance to member publications, program officers becomes
attuned to shifts in higher education, especially efforts to politicize
curricula, thwart academic freedom, or silence unpopular opinions.
"Thank you for meeting with my staff. Your insight into some issues
our paper is facing was very useful. Also, you helped me feel
more at ease about stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief.
It is great to know I have a place to turn to in case I need help."
