The Start the Presses seminar is a self-contained colloquium on college student journalism based on the ISI Books edition of Start the Presses! A Handbook for Student Journalists. The annual seminar brings college students together with journalism professionals to provide the training and direction needed for a student to launch a college newspaper or renew an existing publication. Designed for no more than 20 students, the seminar instructs students on how to simplify publishing and improve influence on campus.
It is here where newly added members or member publications requiring more individual instruction receive attention on everything from editorial writing and formulating story ideas, to recruiting staff members and organizing a publication's financial matters. Speakers provide practical instruction that, if followed, will immediately improve the quality of a student publication.
"The course could not have been more engaging. As a CN editor of over a year now, I knew
I could safely anticipate a memorable and invaluable learning experience
not available elsewhere — but what I experienced was exceptional, even
for CN standards. The seminar resulted in a seamless presentation of advice
and counsel that I have already put into practice."
—Right Turn, University of Washington
"The CN staff was friendly and knowledgeable." —The Carolina Review, University of North Carolina
