Five Forgotten Conservatives:
What They Can Teach Us Today

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Sorrento Hotel
900 Madison Street
Seattle, WA

“I wanted to thank you and the ISI staff once again for including me at the recent conference in Seattle. I had a wonderful time, took pages of notes, bought a number of books, and met some fascinating people. All in all, a day well spent! I look forward to attending future conferences and spreading the word to promote your organization.”
—Tina Pisenti

On June 21, 130 ISI students, faculty, and supporters gathered in Seattle for “Five Forgotten Conservatives: What They Can Teach Us Today.” William Byrne of St. John’s University gave an insightful talk about the “father of conservatism,” Edmund Burke; Peter Lawler of Berry College delivered a wonderful—and at times side-splittingly funny—talk about Alexis de Tocqueville; James Matthew Wilson of Villanova University discussed the importance of T. S. Eliot and his work; David Whalen of Hillsdale College gave a delightful presentation on Richard Weaver; and Patrick Deneen of Georgetown University provided informative and thought-provoking remarks on Robert Nisbet and his ideas. Multiple attendees drove over 200 miles to participate in the daylong event, as well as the planned giving seminar and President’s Club dinner the evening before.
