"Liberty and Order: F.A. Hayek and the Road to Serfdom"
"Liberty not only means that the individual has both the opportunity and burden of choice; it also means that he must learn the consequences of his actions and will receive praise or blame for them. Liberty and responsibility are inseparable."
—F.A. Hayek
Annual Fall Leadership Conference
Saturday, November 5, 2005
Program Overview
Over six decades ago, Friedrich Hayek awakened the conservative impulse in
America with the publication of The Road to Serfdom. At a time when America
was seriously questioning whether our free institutions would survive the twin
calamities of depression and world war, Hayek delivered what would become
the definitive defense of a free market society based on competition and the
rule of law. The 2005 North Carolina Leadership Conference provides an
opportunity to reengage with Hayek's critique of collectivism, the role of state
intervention, the meaning of equality, the cultivation of private initiative, and
the prospects for the future of liberty and order.
