Bache Renshaw Fellowship for Doctoral Study in Education
Deadline for fellowships is January 16th of the year in which they will be awarded.
Grounding elementary and secondary teachers in the Western tradition and American institutions is essential if our schools are to prepare succeeding generations for citizenship. It is therefore vital that teacher-training programs be staffed by educators who both appreciate the importance of passing on our heritage and are capable of providing future teachers with a solid understanding of Western history, economics, political and moral philosophy, and literature.
Russell Kirk keenly identified the plight of higher education nearly forty years ago when commenting on educators who have purposefully politicized the process of learning:
“They [educators] see the university and state colleges as training camps for revolutionists, not for the cultivation of the mind or the inculcation of reverence for our heritage, which is what the university is all about.”
The Renshaw Fellowship seeks to correct decades of harm perpetrated by John Dewey and his disciples in those disciplines necessary to passing on our Western heritage. Businessman and philanthropist Bache Renshaw has dedicated this fellowship to educating future Doctors of Education who will work for the sake of the permanent things. Applicants should have a desire to cultivate their educational knowledge and abilities in order to understand their patrimony and pass it on to their students. Successful candidates will intend to pursue doctoral study so that they may:
- Teach future teachers
- Shape and influence curricula
- Contribute to the larger dialogue on pedagogy by writing and lecturing on educational issues
