The Richard and Karna Bodman Scholars in Science:
Enriching the Education of Undergraduates Who Study Science and Technology

Richard and Karna Bodman

ISI’s Richard and Karna Bodman Scholars in Science Program introduces elite undergraduates engaged in such scientific and technical fields of study as computer science, physical science, pre-medicine, nursing mathematics, and engineering to the Liberal Arts curriculum.

‘I found the participation of the faculty to be most valuable. To meet and learn from the intellectual vanguard of American conservatism is a rare opportunity indeed.”
—ISI Bodman Scholar, Yale University

Bodman Scholars receive one-on-one intellectual mentoring from an elite ISI Faculty Associate, whom they meet at an all expenses-paid, summer intellectual conference that explores the ideas which underpin our American heritage, and that of Western civilization as a whole.

“ISI has made a genuine commitment to fostering the development of science students with independent minds who can question the assumptions of today’s academy.”
—ISI Bodman Scholar, Stanford University

Over the course of the year, Bodman Scholars and their Academic Mentors engage in common reading projects, with Scholars receiving such ISI publications as American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia and Modern Age. Bodman Scholars are also invited to participate in weekend colloquia which discuss matters scientific and philosophical, and to ISI’s National Leadership Conference in the spring.

“Having witnessed the teachings of modern science first-hand at a public institution, I have seen that conservatism and science are rarely found in the same medium. My experience as a Bodman Scholar has demonstrated that this need not be so.”
—ISI Bodman Scholar, University of Wisconsin
