ISI at the 2005 Academy of Criminal Justice Science (ACJS) Conference in Chicago

Matthew Chalfant and Francisco Gonzalez
ISI Program Officers, Matthew Chalfant and Francisco Gonzalez, participated in the Academy of Criminal Justice Science's (ACJS) Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The ISI-sponsored exhibit highlighted various elements of its Law Enforcement Project. Over 100 students and faculty involved in the law enforcement and criminal justice fields registered for ISI membership at the event.

Mr. Chalfant and Mr. Gonzalez spoke with hundreds of students and faculty visiting the conference to take part in meetings, workshops, and networking opportunities. ISI's Law Enforcement Project was met with high praise by the conference attendees. ISI's booth and Law Enforcement Project were unique among the other exhibitors who were selling materials and books. ISI's books and information were free and well received by visitors.

A majority of the conference attendees were unfamiliar with the new ISI project, but were intrigued because of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund's partnership. Upon hearing an overview of the project, many were excited to sign up and receive more information on hosting a lecture, participating in the current Law Enforcement essay contest, receiving a Law Enforcement Library, and partnering with ISI as student groups through the project. A number of professors also expressed excitement about the program and plan to get their students involved.

The ISI Program Officers were pleased to hear a large number of the conference attendees were already familiar with the ISI project; some were current ISI members who had taken part in a past essay contest, hosted a lecture, or received a mailing introducing them to the program. Valuable contacts were made with staff, faculty, and students at the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honors Society, John Jay College of Criminal Justice (New York, NY), San Jose State University (San Jose, CA), Texas Southern University (Houston, TX) and Loyola University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois).

An array of free ISI publications were offered to conference participants.Matthew Chalfant talks with a student from Loyola University about ISI's Law Enforcement Project.
