Local High School Students Awarded Scholarships in the George Washington Essay Contest

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) and the George Washington Society recently announced the top three winners in their George Washington Essay contest. Students were asked to write on "The Idea of America: How George Washington's Example Shaped our Nation."

Nicole Gokool, a sophomore at St. Mark's High School in Wilmington, DE, received the first place prize of $300.00. Alexis I. DuPont High School senior, Aman K. Sharman, was named second place winner with a prize of $200.00. Gregory M. Pask, a senior at Wildwood Catholic in North Wildwood, NJ, received the third place prize of $100.00. The top eight finalists will attend the annual "Toast to Washington Dinner" at the DuPont Country Club on February 19th, 2004 where Miss Gokool will read her first place essay. All prizes will be awarded at this dinner, including a small library of books from ISI for each of the finalists attending.

"Now more than ever students need a strong understanding of our nation's founding principles," said Mike Ratliff, ISI's Vice President of Programs and former Director of U.S. Naval Intelligence. "The winning essays demonstrated that the students had researched the topic and consequently learned the important role George Washington played in the history of the United States. Judges selected the winners based on the essay's flow, grasp of the theme, sense of history and grammar. The winning essays captured all of these qualities."
